What is Respiratory Physiology?

Respiratory Physiology is the assessment of breathing and lung health, and how these can be impacted by lifestyle and disease. During an appointment, the Physiologist can use different tests to look at breathing pattern, lung capacity, the health of the airways and blood vessels in the lungs, and the ability of the lungs to transfer gases such as oxygen in and out of the body.

What Respiratory Conditions do we investigate?

We investigate a wide range of respiratory conditions at Fitzrovia Hospital, including but not limited to: Asthma, Bronchiectasis, COPD, Interstitial Lung Disease, Sarcoidosis, Breathing Pattern Disorder, and Unexplained Breathlessness.

Respiratory Physiology

What services do we offer?

At Fitzrovia Hospital we offer the following services for all your respiratory needs:

  • Spirometry - A quick and easy insight into lung health, looking at lung capacity and airway health.

  • Bronchodilator reversibility - Important for Asthma and COPD diagnoses, bronchodilator reversibility determines whether an individual’s airway obstruction can be improved with inhalers or not.

  • Fractional Expired Nitric Oxide (FeNO) - This test measures the amount of Nitric Oxide, a marker of lung inflammation often seen in Asthma, present in the lungs.

  • Body Plethysmography - This test is the gold-standard assessment of lung capacity and is very useful in the diagnosis and maintenance of diseases such as COPD and Lung Fibrosis.

  • Gas Transfer - This test measures the ability of the lungs to move gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, in and out of the lungs.

  • Full Lung Function - Spirometry, Gas Transfer and Body Plethysmography together, with additional FeNO and Bronchodilator Reversibility if needed.

  • Impulse Oscillometry - An assessment of airway obstruction by sending sound waves into the airways. Impulse Oscillometry requires minimal effort and is very easy to perform, making it accessible to all patients.
  • Impulse Oscillometry - An assessment of airway obstruction by sending sound waves into the airways. Impulse Oscillometry requires minimal effort and is very easy to perform, making it accessible to all patients.

  • Bronchial Provocation Challenge - This test is used to screen for hypersensitive airways, a form of Asthma that is only causes symptoms when the airways come into contact with an allergen or pollutant.

  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) - This test is the gold standard for measuring physical fitness. It measures VO2max, which has strong links to fitness and longevity, and can be used to assess risk prior to major surgery or treatments such as chemotherapy. In addition, CPET can be used when trying to find the cause of unexplained breathlessness, as its comprehensive assessment of the heart, lungs, blood, and muscles as they respond to exercise enables the team to locate any areas of the body that aren’t functioning properly.
  • CPET can also be used to assess exercise-induced Asthma, and shortness of breath on exertion, a common symptom of COPD and other respiratory conditions.
  • At Fitzrovia, our Physiologist can also help you devise a training program tailored specifically for you based on your heart rate zones measured during CPET.
