Types of body surgery at the Fitzrovia Hospital

Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat from one or more areas of the body.

It can be used for small areas, such as the space under the chin or for larger areas, including the stomach, thighs, buttocks, hips or knees.

Liposuction is also referred to as lipoplasty, suction lipectomy, or body contouring. It is a relatively safe procedure and involves a very simple process. A tiny incision is made within the target area into which a small tube is inserted. Fat cells are broken down via the movement of the tube and then sucked away.

How can patients benefit from liposuction?
  • Provides an alternative to more invasive plastic surgery procedures by eliminating fat from specific areas like the abdomen, thighs, or chin, or enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) without large incisions (scars).
  • Balances an out-of-proportion body type, for example, reducing the saddlebags on the thighs of a “pear-shaped” body or reducing abdominal girth in men.
  • Enhances facial surgery procedures such as facelift by removing pockets of fat from under the chin.
  • Can amplify diet and exercise by contouring the stubborn areas that do not respond to these efforts.

Tummy tuck / abdominoplasty

Tummy Tuck or abdominoplasty is an effective way of removing excess abdominal fat and skin, resulting in a flatter tummy and slimmer waistline.

There are many reasons why patients choose abdominoplasty;

  • sagging skin following childbirth (when the skin is unable to return to its original shape)
  • extreme weight loss when a person is left with unsightly loose skin around the lower waist
  • Natural signs of aging also contribute to the skin losing its elasticity

Patients looking for a treatment which offers reasonably predictable results in the shape of a flatter tummy generally choose abdominoplasty.

The treatment works by making incisions, allowing the removal of surplus skin and fat deposits in the abdominal lower waist. The abdominal muscles are pulled tightly and held together with permanent sutures.

The remaining skin is then pulled down towards the original incision where any extra skin is removed leaving reasonable/discreet scarring.

Abdominoplasty is extremely popular treatment due to the high rate of patient satisfaction. As with any invasive procedure, realistic expectations are required. A balanced diet and regular exercise is recommended following treatment.

Qualified doctors will discuss the procedure before any treatment, explaining any possible side effects.

VASER

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy) liposuction (also known as VASER lipo, LipoSelection Ultrasonic liposuction)an advanced body contouring technique for unwanted fat removal which offers a safe alternative to traditional liposuction. It is the most effective minimally invasive method for removing unwanted fat from your body, thus creating a defined and sculpted look. In this technique of liposuction, the surgeon breaks up and emulsifies the fat prior to removal by an ultrasound probe which facilitates the liposuction process and reduces pain. VASER liposuction combines ultrasonic waves (inaudible sound wave) liposuction technology where ultrasonic waves precisely breaks up and liquefies/emulsifies targeted fat without disrupting connective tissue, nerves or blood vessels followed by liposuction to safely remove the stubborn body fat with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue resulting in a limited bruising and a shorter recovery time.

Am I a Candidate for VASER liposuction?
  • If you are a healthy person with an active lifestyle having a stubborn area(s) of accumulated fat (without loose skin) which cannot seem to shift despite repeated attempts through diet and/or exercise.
  • If you are looking for an athletic appearance and would want to get back to normal activities as soon as possible with a faster recovery period.
  • If you are looking for minimally invasive and low pain treatment option to contour your body.
Types of VASER Lipo-

Because the treatment is so advanced and demanding, there are several different ways the VASER technology is used to give precise results, depending on your desired final result. Standard Vaser, Hi-Def (High Definition) and VASER 4D are the evolution of body sculpting. VASER Hi-Def and VASER 4D are particularly popular with an individual looking to achieve athletic toning. Let's understand what each of these means.

Standard VASER lipo- It simply removes the bulk of unwanted fat.

VASER Hi-Def- It is also sculpting/contouring but creates more of a static look.

VASER 4D- It is generally performed to create an athletic or more contoured silhouette that takes muscle motion into consideration. The most popular are abdominal etching creating the coveted ‘six pack’. VASER 4D is suitable for generally healthy people who struggle to get rid of fat in specific areas including the hips, thighs, abdomen, lower back, arms and chin.

Cosmetic Gynaecological

Cosmetic Gynaecology is an area of special interest that covers a variety of procedures that includes both cosmetic procedures to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the vulvo/vaginal region, as well as functional vaginal repairs to enhance or help restore sexual function.

Cosmetic Gynaecology has become one of the fastest growing subspecialties of elective surgery for women.

It includes specialists in gynaecology, urology, and plastic surgery. This area of special interest includes both cosmetic procedures to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the vulvo/vaginal region, as well as functional vaginal repairs to enhance or help restore sexual function following the changes that may occur following childbirth and/or ageing.

Procedures include:
  • Vaginal rejuvenation
  • Labioplasty
  • Vaginoplasty
Who is a suitable patient:
  • Women who are facing physical discomfort while having sex or doing any physical activities.
  • Women who are not satisfied with their labial size or appearance can go for this procedure.
  • Often due to childbirth, the labia get stretched and torn. Women after childbirth can go for this procedure.

Fat Transfer to Buttocks

No doubt that everyone wants a perfect figure with better-contoured body parts but sometimes, a fuller youthful bottom can lose volume as a result of age, pregnancy or with sudden weight loss. There was also a time when a woman asked, ‘does my bum look big in this?’ Now, however, a plump posterior has become a more desired shape and with the bum enlargement procedure it has become possible.

So you’ll be pleased to hear that undergoing a bum enlargement treatment doesn't mean you need to resort to implants either. Fat transfer is also a great option which is otherwise known as ‘Brazilian Buttock Lift’ which gives you longer lasting effect.

Am I a Candidate for Fat Transfer to the buttock?
  • If you feel that your
  • If you have asymmetric or misshaped
  • If you want to improve the size and shape of your
  • If you
  • If you are scared of major cosmetic surgery

If you fall in any of these above categories, then Autologous Fat Transfer or Free Fat Transfer (FTT) or just Fat Transfer is best for you.

The concept of Free Fat Transfer (FFT) has been around since the early 1900s when fat was first reported to be used to fill soft tissue defects. But the scope of fat transfer techniques has been continuously broadened to include augmentation of the face, breasts, and other areas of the body such as Buttock.

Fat transfer is a minimally invasive out-patient procedure in which an individual's own body fat is harvested from suitable areas such as from inner knees, outer thighs, flanks, buttocks, or abdomen and injected into the desired area (e.g. the breasts, buttocks, hand, neck or face) to add volume, thereby it results in the loss of unwanted fat from the donor area along with an increase in size of the recipient area. It is also known as autologous fat transfer because the fat that is used for injecting is harvested from your own body.

  • Generally, fat transfer is a safe technique to add volume to the desired area, but it is more popular for breast enhancement and bum enlargement. The technique is also used for facial rejuvenation which adds the lost volume in the required area(s) and sometimes used for penis enlargement. The donor sites typically use for fat transfer to buttocks are your tummy area, back, and thighs.

Liposculpture

  • Do you want to lose that 'double chin' and have a more streamlined jaw line? Are you overweight with fatty areas out of proportion to your body? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above; you may benefit from this new procedure known as Liposculpture.

Liposculpture is not an alternative to weight loss, nor will cellulite and loose skin be cured by this technique. The best candidates are people who are close to their ideal weight but who have stubborn fatty deposits in localised areas of their bodies.

Liposculpture is also known as tumescent liposuction, it differs considerably from conventional liposuction. It is safer and far less traumatising to the body because it employs miniature instruments for extraction and requires local anaesthetic using Klein’s solution. Liposculpture is for those who want to achieve a streamlined, more flattering appearance.

The concept of Liposculpture is a simple one. It improves body contour by permanently removing stubborn fat deposits between the skin and muscle. Liposculpture has evolved from merely removing bulges to transforming a patient's entire figure. An understanding of proportion and the ability to safely remove enough fat to change the lines and symmetry of the body have made Liposculpture an effective procedure for clients that have had limited success with diet and exercise programmes.

Which areas can be treated?

Liposculpture can benefit almost all areas where fat accumulates. The most common areas include:

  • Arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Flanks or "love handles"
  • Double chin
  • Knees
  • Calves
  • Waist.

Thigh Lift / Arm Lift

Thigh and arm lifts removes excess fat, tightens the skin and re-contours the areas usually with concealable scars. The face and neck are not the only places where the ageing process can take its toll.

The same skin laxity that causes wrinkles and sagging skin in these areas can also affect the appearance of the thighs and arms.

While the problem is typically caused by the natural ageing process, it can also be due to massive weight loss after bariatric surgery.

A brachioplasty, or arm lift, is a surgical procedure that reshapes and contours the under-side of the upper arm. Brachioplasty reduces excess sagging skin from the underarm to the elbow, while tightening and smoothing out the tissue along the upper arm, reducing localised fat deposits.

Who is a candidate for an arm lift:
  • Have a significant amount of upper arm laxity.
  • Currently have a relatively stable weight range, not significantly overweight.
  • Have loose, saggy or hanging skin along the upper arms; as a result of age, past weight fluctuations.
  • Have tried and failed to reduce the presence of upper arm hanging through diet and exercise.
Who is a candidate for a thigh lift:
  • You are at a relatively stable weight.
  • You have excess soft tissue in the thigh area.
  • You have realistic goals which will be discussed with your consultant.
  • You are in good general health.

Buttock Enhancement

Sometimes, a fuller youthful bottom can lose volume as a result of age or with sudden weight loss. There was also a time when women asked, ‘does my bum look big in this?’ Now however, a plumper posterior has become a more desired shape and with the bum enlargement procedure it has became possible.

So you’ll be pleased to learn that undergoing a bum enlargement treatment doesn't mean you need to resort to implants either.

Hyacorp is an injectable filler which can be used for Buttock Augmentation. Hyacorp (hyaluronic acid) already exists within the body, it does not appear as a foreign substance. Over 10 million people have used this filler with similar treatments on the face, and with little or no side effects.

Now available in a much purer form with larger particles, Hyacorp can be injected into the buttocks using a local anaesthetic to numb the area. After treatment, there is no downtime and no scarring. Another added benefit of Hyacorp injections is that it's now possible to create more subtle changes to the reshaping of the buttocks, which is very difficult to achieve with traditional surgery.

For longer lasting effect, fat transfer can be performed which is otherwise known as 'Brazilian Butt Lift'.

One of the many advantages over implants is that the treatment can be applied to exactly where it's needed, which is almost impossible with surgical implants.

  • The procedure takes only 45-60 minutes (about the same time it takes to nip to the shop to buy a new bra!) and the results are instant, so women can walk out with a much bigger and less flat looking bum!

Body Contouring

It’s not always easy to have the body we want or to look as good as we would like. Over time we often develop stubborn unwanted pockets of fat, which are very difficult to remove with traditional forms of dieting and exercise.

It’s a common problem and one, which many of us suffer. What makes things worse, these areas of stubborn fat often enjoy ‘hanging out’ where we least want them to, such as the buttocks, hips, thighs, tummy, neck, arms and double chins.

With minimal pain and discomfort and ever reducing recovery periods, it’s easy to see why more people are now turning to fat removal treatments to reveal they are a true self with the body they deserve.
